Omdat nylon wordt gewonnen uit ruwe olie, stoot de productie ervan broeikasgassen uit, met name stikstofoxide, dat 300 keer krachtiger is dan koolstofdioxide. Na de productie zijn nylon kledingstukken niet gemakkelijk biologisch afbreekbaar. Bij het wassen kunnen er microvezels in het water terechtkomen, die vervolgens in rivieren, oceanen en uiteindelijk in ons voedsel belanden.
